Munich Fire Science Partnership
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Munich Fire Department are launching a long-term research collaboration at the interface of preventive and defensive fire protection. The focus is on practical topics such as firefighting with lithium-ion batteries, operational tactics, and resource-efficient fire protection.
The collaboration addresses key challenges of the energy transition and urban safety. Plans include experiments on extinguishing lithium-ion batteries, developing new initial attack strategies for use in the state capital of Munich, and evaluating modern building materials in terms of safety for the population and emergency services. In addition to practical experiments, models will also be created. This will enable researchers to quantify the level of fire safety and identify potential savings at the same time. The partnership builds on a series of successful joint projects between TUM and the Munich Fire Department. The close connection between research and practice is transforming the previously sporadic collaboration into a permanent, long-term research partnership. The collaboration will initially run until November 30, 2031.
