The new Chair of Fire Science and Fire Engineering was established at the TUM School of Engineering and Design, in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, for the 2025 summer semester. The professorship brings together the established, accredited fire testing laboratories for the fire behavior of building materials (Winzererstraße, Munich) and building components (Karl-Benz-Straße, Dachau). It is led by Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Claudius Hammann.

The professorship focuses on the following areas:

• Scientific development and understanding of performance-oriented fire protection systems
• Understanding the interface between defensive and preventive fire protection
• Socially acceptable risk in fire protection
• Fire behavior of energy storage systems (e.g., lithium-ion systems, hydrogen systems)
• Use of machine learning/artificial intelligence in fire protection
• Cost-benefit analyses of fire protection measures
• Human-machine interfaces in fire protection
• Scientific investigation of the fire behavior of building materials and components
