Design of Structures II - Project work
The first part of the course is based on a set of lectures which show the engineering process from the architectural concept to the working supporting structure. A sample static is explained focusing on the intangible structural design depending on prevailing load conditions. Calculation and design basics of selected structural types will be presented. In the second part the students work in groups. A structure type and an existing bridge consisting of this structure are allocated to each group. Exemplary the bridge shall be brought into the historical context of engineering. The structure has to be examined in respect to exterior loads and a selected construction detail has to be explained. Finally the group has to design a mock-up of a bridge which will be exposed to a real load test.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the module, students are able to compile relevant loads for a building quantitatively and qualitatively and are able to create a static calculation conceptually.
