Introductory Excursion 2026: Insights into one of Germany’s most challenging infrastructure projects 🚧🚇
Aktuelle Meldungen |
On March 17, 2026, students from the Chair of Concrete and Masonry Structures at the Technical University of Munich, together with Prof. Oliver Fischer, had the opportunity to visit the construction site of the second S-Bahn main line at Munich Central Station.
Following a short introduction, we gained valuable insights into one of the most complex inner-city construction projects in Germany. Particularly impressive were the depth of the excavation and the structural measures implemented to ensure the stability of the existing infrastructure. These include, among others, expansion joints and hydraulic jacks (located between the new shaft structure and the diaphragm walls of the existing U1/U2 subway lines), which are used across multiple levels to control deformations and ensure structural equilibrium of the existing subway system throughout all construction stages.
Another highlight was the explanation of temporary support measures in the area of the historic station hall, whose structural system is continuously monitored and adjusted during the construction works.
The visit concluded with a technical exchange between students and research staff of the chair.
A heartfelt thank you to Deutsche Bahn and the project team of the second S-Bahn main line for organizing the visit and providing these valuable insights!
