Chair Excursion 2026 - BRENNER BASE TUNNEL
news-hydro |
On 17 July, we went on this year's departmental field trip to the Brenner Base Tunnel. The 55 km long tunnel will be the world's longest underground railway line and is currently one of Europe's largest infrastructure projects. Upon arrival in Steinach am Brenner, we were provided with a fascinating insight into the project, including its geological and hydrogeological challenges and how it was implemented, via a presentation. This was followed by a one-hour tour of the tunnel. Only as we drove through it did we realise just how large-scale the project is, consisting of two main tubes and an exploration tunnel. Hopefully, we’ll be able to travel through this tunnel by train in a few years!
