Congratulations to Michael Angelopoulos for winning the Helmholtz Investigator Group grant!
Michael Angelopoulos was awarded a Helmholtz Investigator Group grant, which is expected to begin in March 2027. Hydrogeological Systems of Arctic Permafrost in Transition: Into Unfrozen Reservoirs and Networks (SATURN) will investigate unfrozen networks in coastal permafrost induced by sub-aquatic thawing and freezing-point depression from salt in former marine sediments. SATURN aims to quantify how, where, and under what conditions permafrost develops unfrozen structures and how they create pathways for greenhouse gases, using time-lapse geophysical field studies, sediment coring, atmospheric flux measurements, and process-based modeling. The project, valued at 1.75 million euros, will be based at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research and run for five years. The Technical University of Munich, specifically the Chair of Landslide Research, is the official university partner for this work. We look forward to a fruitful collaboration between AWI and TUM!
