22/05/2014 Field investigations may connect climate and rock fracturing at Långören Island

Late last summer two videos appeared documenting spectacular fractures forming in bedrock at locations in both California and Finland. Kerry Leith joined members of the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) to undertake geophysical surveys and detailed mapping of the fractures produced on Långören Island. The data recorded is expected to shed light on a possible link between extreme 2014 summer temperatures at both sites, and the new fractures forming in extremely old bedrock. A possible climate link was highlighted in a blog post by Kerry Leith on www.stressdriven.com, and results from the field studies are expected to form the basis of a new publication documenting this rare event.
