BIM projects winter term 19/20

In order to provide a place for retreat, contemplation, study and workshops, as well as team-building events for employees of the TUM, it has been decided that the TUM should get its own Alpine Retreat. This Retreat is to be located at the Wendelstein. The Wendelstein is an 1838m high summit that is part of the Bavarian Alps. Due to its elevated position, it provides extensive views but also intense exposure to sun and weather. The summit area is accessible by cable car from Bayrischzell and rack railway from Brannenburg. The building area lies below the summit and is reachable by foot via narrow trails or skiing in winter.

The new building should house accommodation for about 25 people and include a multifunctional meeting area. It should be suited to accommodate seminars or team-building workshops for academic institutions of the TUM. The challenge will be to fit the building into the surroundings, minimize impact on the environment, to develop an efficient construction method that can be applied in this environment and find ways of self-sufficient energy and waste management. A further challenge will involve the transportation of material to the building site.

Design Requirements

Each interdisciplinary group of three should design a new Alpine retreat for the TUM.

  • Design a new Alpine Retreat suitable for overnight stays, meetings and workshops
  • Provide enough space to accomodate 25 people
  • Provide a multifunctional meeting room for workshops and presentations
  • Provide a kitchen area for self-catering
  • Provide necessary facilities such as bathrooms etc.
  • Consider other optional functions which suit the architectural concept
  • The footprint of the building should be no more than 220 sqm. Minimise impact on the environment
  • Consider how to transport building elements and construction equipment to the remote site
  • Consider self-sufficient energy and waste management systems
