Content

The module provides theoretical and practical skills for product development and design for electric tools in the construction industry. The structure of the individual subjects is as follows:

  • Fundamentals of product development cycles (with a focus on electrical tools in the construction industry)
  • Design and development process, testing of mechanical assemblies
  • Mechanical modeling of product characteristics (identification of mechanical product properties and selection of suitable physical models)
  • Simulation methods for product development (numerical modeling, simulation and evaluation of results)
  • Quantification and evaluation of model variations (modeling errors, production errors)
  • Future prospects of product lifecycles

Within the scope of the moderated project work students assume the role of simulation engineers, whereby they are in charge of assessing the mechanical properties of assemblies. Here, students get acquainted to the operation principles of developing power tools for the construction industry. To achieve this, they form project groups where they enact the product development cycle of a component to be selected.

During self-study periods, the project groups research design approaches for their designated component and discuss these with the lecturer and within the group. Moreover, using suitable software, model properties are to be numerically analysed to assess mechanical problems and identify solutions.

The outcome of the project groups' work will be presented and discussed within the course to enable a critical view on the chosen methods as well as broaden the students view for different solution approaches.
