Fire Engineering

This course extend the previous taught content of the course Basics of Fire Protection. The course provides an understanding of analytical and experimental methods in fire engineering, in respect to fire and smoke spread, the structural design, the design of escape routes and occupant safety. The single topics may be summarised as follows:

  • fire risk assessment
  • design fires
  • structural design methods for the case of fire
  • smoke spread, smoke simulation
  • evacuation analysis
  • fire safety for special structures
  • fire protection in building stock

Learning Outcomes

After attending this course students are able to:

  • apply and extend the acquired knowledge in respect to fire safe building design oneself
  • determine design fires for various fire scenarios
  • assess safety for occupants and the structure in case of fire
  • create building specific fire protection concepts under consideration of prescriptive codes and engineering methods
