• Design and application of hybrid and advanced systems for water treatment for various direct and indirect reuse purposes, drinking water purification and advanced wastewater treatment
• Management of the anthropogenic water cycle in view of an accelerating climate change
• Advanced water treatment in water and wastewater treatment systems: ad-/sorption, membrane filtration, oxidation including advanced oxidation processes, disinfection, natural treatment systems
• Adsorption: process design and scale-up/-down, fundamental investigation of competitive adsorption in aqueous media, novel sorbent regeneration methods
• Membrane filtration: microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, fouling mitigation and membrane cleaning
• Process modeling and employment of surrogate parameters for process control
• Removal of trace organic compounds, notably (very) persistent and (very) mobile (PMT/vPvM) substances including PFAS, and elimination/inactivation of microorganisms

• Contribution to the Technical Committee „Persistent-Mobile-Toxic (PMT) Substances“, Water Chemistry Society, German Chemistry Society (GDCh)
• Contribution to the DWA guidelines M1200 part 2 „Wasserwiederverwendung für landwirtschaftliche und urbane Zwecke in Deutschland“ (water reuse for agricultural and urban irrigation in Germany), working group KA-8.3, Deutsche Vereinigung für Wasserwirtschaft, Abwasser und Abfall e. V. (DWA)
